Clark Griswold: [to his kids, played by the fourth different set of actors in as many "Vacation" movies] You guys are growing up so fast, I hardly recognize you anymore!
James Bond: You were pretty good with that hook. Wai-Lin: Thanks. It comes from growing up in a rough neighborhood. You were pretty good on the bike. James Bond: Thank you. It comes from not growing up at all.
Stephen: Well I don't want our kids growing up thinking there powerless because of me. Everything they do in this world has a consequence. Our children still believe in miracles. They still believe anything is possible. As long as they believe like that, they're gonna be something. They're gonna make a difference in the world... that means I made a difference.
Youth is wasted on the young.
Vincenzo Coccotti: Sicilians are great liars. The best in the world. I'm Sicilian. My father was the world heavy-weight champion of Sicilian liars. From growing up with him I learned the pantomime. There are seventeen different things a guy can do when he lies to give himself away. A guys got seventeen pantomimes. A woman's got twenty, but a guy's got seventeen... but, if you know them, like you know your own face, they beat lie detectors all to hell. Now, what we got here is a little game of show and tell. You don't wanna show me nothin', but you're tellin me everything. I know you know where they are, so tell me before I do some damage you won't walk away from.
Reese Holdin: For some reason I imagine you as an only child growing up in some vast, impenetrable mansion with turrets, Daddy modeling perpetual tennis wear, Mum playing badminton and having biscuits and tea on the front lawn. Why don't you go back to Narnia or wherever the fuck you're from and leave my dad alone?
Anthony DeMarie: One of the first things you learn growing up in the parks is that life is tough and it ain't always fair... and the only people you can truly count on - are your friends.
Caine: For all the bullshit they try to teach you in high school, I graduated with about half of it. But then, I didn't go to school but half the time. The other half, I was out selling dope. Growing up out here, there was shit that couldn't be learned in no classroom.
The Twinkee: [about his growing up in a predominantly Caucasian neighborhood of the Upper East Side, NYC] So you can say I haven't really pursued the "Asian Sensation" because I haven't really met any of those Asian girls. But now I'm here [at this new school with a more diverse student body] The Twinkee: and I want to find out what I have been "missing out on."
Amanda Lemmon: This orphan stuff is like growing up in the dog-pound. Everybody wants a puppy.
Jamie: I have Mary. She's a Patriot Girl too, except British. She escaped the bombing of London during World War II. Phoebe: I know who she is. She's a loser. Jamie: You think? Phoebe: What are you looking for? Jamie: Money. Yesterday I found a dollar. I'm saving up for Sings With Birds, the noble Sioux girl growing up in 1732. Phoebe: Do you want my Catherine doll? Jamie: Thanks, but I have her.
[first lines] Barry: You're beautiful just the way you are, Jasira. Those other girls are just jealous because you're growing up faster than they are. And you're prettier than they are. Listen, don't let it get you down. Stupid names they're calling you. This year - just gimme a second [wets the razor] Barry: this year, your gonna shut them up. Only, probably you shouldn't tell your mom about this.
Gary Bradley: Nature in your life, very quickly becomes God. A God who gives great abundance at times... and takes everything away at times. [on growing up on a farm]
Bobby: Jack, it was a questionable kill. Jack: What makes you think that? Bobby: Boy, it's sad, you growing up without a father. Nobody taught you anything, did they? Maybe I should've stayed around longer and held your little hand, huh sweetheart? Sometimes pros will cover up their shots with another crime, like a burglary or something, then pay a witness to throw the cops onto the wrong suspect. Jack: Why would anybody wanna kill the sweetest woman in the God-damn world? Bobby: I dunno, Jackie. I dunno.
Stories are like children. They grow in their own way.
Martin Daniels: Listen to me. Listen to me a minute. [Places Stephen in the center of the table] Martin Daniels: Just leave the dinosaur there, I'm trying to tell you something. When I... When I was a little boy... You know, you touch the dinosaur, I'm gonna kill you. Clifford: Stephen wanted to stand here. Martin Daniels: Give it to me! I'll rip its head off! Give it to me! God almighty, Boy! Now listen to me, I'm trying to tell you something to help you. When I was a little boy growing up in Chicago, there was this great amusement park called Riverview. Your father tell you about it? Clifford: Yes. Martin Daniels: I thought that was the only place where a boy like me could be happy but my father never took me there. And then one day, they tore it down before I ever got a chance to go. I understand how you feel. Clifford: Does it ever get easier, Uncle Martin? Martin Daniels: Not really.
Want any of this stuff? Jordan?... Nick?
That is another chamber of my heart that shows no electrical activity - the chamber that used to flicker into life when I saw a film that moved me, or read a book that inspired me, or listened to music that made me want to cry. I closed that chamber myself, for all the usual reasons. And now I seem to have made a pact with some philistine devil: if I don't attempt to re-open it, I will be allowed just enough energy and optimism to get through a working day without wanting to hang myself.
...As we passed over the dark bridge her wan face fell lazily against my coat's shoulder and the formidable stroke of thirty died away with the reassuring pressure of her hand. So we drove on toward death through the cooling twilight.
