Jesse:
Do you remember when I told you that I was 104 years old? [Winnie nods]
Jesse:
Well... it's the honest truth. [Winnie looks confused]
Jesse:
I'm gonna live forever. I'm never gonna change. The same with Miles and Tuck and Mae. Something happened to us. I mean, as far as I know, I... I'm gonna be 17 until the end of the world. It's the spring, Winnie. Something's wrong with it. It stops you right where you are, if you'd had a drink of it today, you'd stay just like you are... [Both hear a rustling noise. They turn around to see Miles]
Miles:
Don't you wish he'd told you... before you kissed him? Did he tell you that immortality isn't all the preachers crack it up to be?
Jesse:
Hey, leave her alone, Miles!
Miles:
Well, now, you wanted her to hear it Jesse-boy. She's the first person you want to tell the truth to.
Jesse:
You just don't want me to have what you lost.
Winnie:
Stop this... both of you. Tell me... the truth... I wanna know.
Miles:
[Miles nods and walks over towards Jesse and Winnie] We all had a drink. Except for the cat, and that's important. [the rest of the monologue is told in flashbacks of what Miles is saying]
Miles:
The water tasted like... heaven. It floated over your tongue like a cloud. Tuck carved a T in the trunk and we moved on west to find a place to settle down. We put up a house for Mae and Tuck and a little shed for Jesse and me. That was the first time we figured there was something... peculiar. Jesse fell thirty feet and landed on is neck. He was up on his feet before Mae could work up a good cry. Didn't hurt him a bit, no broken bones... nothing. But that's not all... not by a long shot. Things began to happen. Some brush-poppers mistook Mae's horse for a deer. Thing is, the bullets didn't kill hime. Barely even left a mark. Then Tuck got bitten by a rattle snake, and you know what... he didn't die. [laughing]
Miles:
But the cat did, of old age. [Somberly, touching the ring on his finger]
Miles:
And Miles got married. [Whispering]
Miles:
Bo. Little Anna. [Out loud]
Miles:
Tuck figured it early on. It was the spring. We all drank from it, even the horse. It had to be... the source of our changelessness. I begged her to come back... to me and find the spring and drink from it. The children, too. It was our only hope... to be together. She'd made up her mind that I'd... sold my soul to the devil. And she left me. She took my babies with her. [Angrily, with tears in his eyes]
Miles:
Everyone... pulled away after that. There was talk of witchcraft... and... black magic. I went lookin' for wars to fight... and I saw brave men die at Vera Cruz. And then Gettysburg. Thousands of them in the blink of an eye. [Crying]
Miles:
But not me. I couldn't die. Like Little Anna. The influenza took her before she was fifteen. And Bo. He'd be almost eighty now if he were still alive. And my sweet... my sweet young bride. She died in an insame asylum. Old and alone. But I'm still here... I'm still here. [Unable to say any more, he just cries. We turn to Winnie, who is also crying. The screen fades to black]
Elizabeth James:
[thinking she is talking to her father, who has a newspaper up between them] Hey stranger...
Hallie:
[puts down newspaper. then] Hey Mom, did you know that the Concorde gets you here in half the time?
Elizabeth James:
[flustered] Yes, I, I've heard that...
Annie:
[after Hallie surprises Elizabeth and Annie by arriving in London and showing up at their home before Elizabeth and Annie do] What are you doing here?
Hallie:
It took us abound 30 seconds after you guys left for us to realize we didn't want to lose you two again.
Elizabeth James:
We?
Nick Parker:
[walking in from another room] We. I made the mistake of not coming after you once, Lizzie. I'm not going to do that again no matter how brave you are.
Elizabeth James:
And I suppose you just expect me to go weak at the knees, and fall into your arms, and cry hysterically. And say we'll just figure this whole thing out. A bi-continental relationship with our daughters being raised here and there. And. And, you and I just picking up where we left off and growing old together. And... and... c'mon, Nick, what do you expect? To live happily ever after?
Nick Parker:
Yes. To all of the above. Except you don't have to cry hysterically.
Elizabeth James:
[With tears in her eyes] Oh, yes I do. [he kisses her]
[the amnesiac Capt Crewe comes across Sara crying in a corner of a darkened room]
Capt. Crewe:
What is it? Why are you crying? Please tell me. I won't hurt you. Won't you tell me your name?
Sara Crewe:
[sobbing] Sara.
Capt. Crewe:
'Sara'... that's such a pretty name.
Sara Crewe:
[there is a flash of lightening, and the lights suddenly come back on] Papa...?
Capt. Crewe:
What did you say? [she runs to him, and he tries to hold her away]
Capt. Crewe:
I'm sorry...
Sara Crewe:
Papa, it's me! It's Sara!
Capt. Crewe:
Do you know me?
Sara Crewe:
Papa, don't you remember me? Papa, please! You've got to know me! It's Sara, remember? Remember India and Maya? Remember the Ramayana... and Emily? And the locket with Mama's picture?
Capt. Crewe:
[still struggling to push her away] No...
Sara Crewe:
Papa, please!
Charles Randolph:
[Mr Randolph arrives with Miss Minchin and the police] Do you know this man?
Sara Crewe:
Papa, tell them!
Miss Minchin:
[recognizes Captain Crewe] This child has no father. Take her away!
Sara Crewe:
[a police man tears Sara away and carries her, kicking and screaming, from the room] No! No! Papa!
Capt. Crewe:
I'm so sorry...
Rasputin:
Bartok, get me a comb, find some cologne. I want to look my best!
Bartok:
That might take some work, sir.
Rasputin:
We're going to a party!
Bartok:
A party? Ooh, I could teach you the latest dance step. It starts with, like, a "whoa." And then you get really crazy with the hips, sir. It's fun!
Rasputin:
We'll let the Grand Duchess Anastasia have her moment.
Bartok:
[dancing] Aah, who cares?
Rasputin:
And then we'll kill her!
Bartok:
Right. Kill... kill her? Sir, what happened to the party idea?
Rasputin:
That's where I will kill her. [laughs and tears up newspaper]
Rasputin:
Crush her at the height of her glory.
Bartok:
And we're back to the crushing. Sir, I'm begging you, please, please forget the girl and get a life!
Rasputin:
Oh, I'll get a life, Bartok. Hers!
Lida 'Stony' Newsom:
[holding up a check] Look! Did your sister come through for you or what?
Stevie Newsom:
Where did you get this?
Lida 'Stony' Newsom:
Don't worry about where I got it from. That ain't none of your business. Just look at the digits!
Stevie Newsom:
Look, Stony, there's something I got to tell you.
Lida 'Stony' Newsom:
Look, Stevie, I know this is hardly enough money. But I swear, I will get every...
Stevie Newsom:
No, no, listen to me. I didn't get into U.C.L.A., and I'm not going because I didn't get accepted.
Lida 'Stony' Newsom:
[angrily slaps Stevie] You didn't get IN?
Stevie Newsom:
Come on, Stony, don't go off on me now...
Lida 'Stony' Newsom:
DON'T you tell me not to go off on you! Do you have any IDEA what I had to go through? Do you?
Stevie Newsom:
I'm not staying around for this. [moves to leave]
Lida 'Stony' Newsom:
[grabbing Stevie's shirt] You ARE going to hang around for this, and don't you move. Why did you have to lie to me?
Stevie Newsom:
Stony, you know how long you told me that I HAD to go to college? Well, I'm sorry, but maybe that life just isn't for me. [exits the apartment]
Lida 'Stony' Newsom:
[tears the check into pieces]
Sarah Jordan:
Why do you never say my name?
Nick Callahan:
Sorry?
Sarah Jordan:
You never say my name. Why?
Nick Callahan:
pauses - What's the first thing you do when you get a cold?
Sarah Jordan:
What?
Nick Callahan:
What's the first thing you do when you get a cold?
Sarah Jordan:
Uh... chicken soup, aspirin, scotch...
Nick Callahan:
You never just have the cold?
Sarah Jordan:
I don't know what...
Nick Callahan:
interrupts - Taken nothing. Just have the cold?
Sarah Jordan:
No
Nick Callahan:
No, and that's us, right? We drown it. Kill it. Numb it, anything not to feel. You know, when I was a doctor in London, no one ever said 'medahani'. They don't thank you like they thank you here. Cos here they feel everything, straight from God. There's no drugs, no painkillers. It's the weirdest, purest thing - suffering. And when you've seen that kind of courage in a li... - pauses, tears well up -... in a child... How could you ever want to do anything but just hold him in your arms? You remember that boy in London, JoJo?
Sarah Jordan:
Yes of course
Nick Callahan:
He was my first save, 10 years old. So thin he could barely stand. But he still found the strength the bury the rest of his family. We have no idea what courage is... He used to write me little notes. He helped me in the clinic. He was good. He was sweet, he was good. He wanted to be like me, I liked that. I mean, it was silly and childish, but it made me feel good about myself. So I took him with me to London, you know, my talisman, my courageous Africa... - pauses - How could I be so bloody stupid? How could I be so totally selfish? The point is... he was my friend. He had a name. So now I HAVE to remember him. If everybody I lose has a name...
Harry Block:
You know, I cannot understand why the most sophisticated of women can't tell the difference between a meaningless, hot, passionate sexual affair and a nice, solid, tranquil, routine marriage.
Joan:
[breaking down] Tell me, Harry, just tell me something. Was she the only one, or were there others?
Harry Block:
No, Amy Pollock was the only one, may God strike me dead if I am lying.
Joan:
You're an atheist, Harry!
Harry Block:
Wha-hey, we're alone in the universe, you're going to blame that on me, too?
Joan:
[angrily tears papers from typewriter] Stop your tap-dancing...
