The Riddler: Can Bruce Wayne and Batman ever truly coexist? We'll find out today! But first, let's meet our contestants! Behind curtain number one... [the Riddler reveals Chase Meridian tied up and hung in a container high up in the room] The Riddler: The absolute fabulous Dr. Chase Meridian. She enjoys hiking, getting her nails done, and foolisihly hopes to be the love of Bruce's life! And behind curtain number two... [the Riddler reveals an identical container nearby Chase's. This one has Robin tied up] The Riddler: Batman's one and only partner. This acrobat-turned orphan likes Saturday morning cartoons and one day dreams being... The Riddler: [whispers] ... bare naked with a girl! The Riddler: And below these contestants... my personal favorite. A watery grave! [the Riddler reveals two holes in the floor leading into a dark pit. Both are underneath the two containers] The Riddler: [points to his scepter] Just one little touch, and you're two friends are *gull feed* on the rocks below. Not enough time to save them both. Which will it be, Batman? Bruce's love or the Dark Knight's junior partner? [the Riddler imitates a game show timer while Batman ponders in thought] Batman: There is no way for me to save them or myself. This is all one giant death trap. The Riddler: Judges? The Riddler: [makes a buzzer noise] I'm sorry. Your answer must be in the form of a question. But thank you for playing. [the Riddler begins to push the button on his scepter] Batman: Wait! I have a riddle for you! The Riddler: For me? Really? Tell me. Batman: I see without seeing. To me, darkness is as clear as daylight. What am I? The Riddler: Please! You're as blind as a bat! Batman: Exactly. [throws a batarang at his throne]
Steve: Better heroes, huh? Listen, girls. My name is Steve. I'm a monster. I've been coming here for three days, causing all sorts of damage to your town. And what do I get? Two days of no-shows, and now this. A flag girl who does rope tricks, some rabbit, and Little Miss Darkness who's afraid of a little sun. Buttercup: Hey! Do you have any idea who you're talking to? Bubbles: We're superheroes! Blossom: Real ones! Steve: Yeah, well, that's great and all, but what am I supposed to tell the guys back on Monster Isle? You see, when a monster visits Townsville, he must fight the Powerpuff Girls. And if he can hold his own and make it back to Monster Isle alive, he's a hero. Now this new bit is just not gonna cut it. Sure, you didn't have a thirst for vengeance, stickers with your face on them, or souped-up vehicles, cause you didn't need them! See? Even if you take away the costumes, props, and angst, you still have all the bravery and courage it takes to save the day. So what do you say? Powerpuff Girls? Blossom: Let's get him, girls! Steve: Now that's better!
The Stranger: Darkness warshed over the Dude - darker'n a black steer's tookus on a moonless prairie night. There was no bottom.
Eli: Write everything exactly as I say it. The first book of Moses, called Genesis. Chapter 1, verse 1. In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. Eli: Verse 2. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. Eli: Verse 3. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
[Hayes has just explained the subtext of Heart of Darkness to Jimmy] Jimmy: It's not an adventure story. Is it, Mr. Hayes? Hayes: No, Jimmy. It's not.
Saruman: Moria... You fear to go into those mines. The dwarves delved too greedily and too deep. You know what they awoke in the darkness of Khazad-dum... shadow and flame.
[first lines] Narrator: It is said that over 150 years ago, in the town of Darkness Falls, Matilda Dixon was adored by all the children. Whenever they would lose a tooth they would bring it to her in exchange for a gold coin, earning her the name, the Toothfairy. But fate was not kind to Matilda. One night fire tore through her home leaving her face horribly scarred. Matilda's burned flesh was so sensitive to light she could only go out at night, always wearing a porcelain mask so no one could ever look upon her face. One day two children didn't come home. The town's people blamed Matilda - they hanged her, tearing of her mask, exposing her hideous face to the light. And with her dying breath Matilda laid a curse upon Darkness Falls. The next morning the little children were found safe and sound. The town buried their secret along with Matilda's body. Since then there are some who believe that Matilda visits the children of Darkness Falls on the night they lose their last tooth, seeking her vengeance on any who lay their eyes upon her face, fulfilling her curse: What I took before in kindness, I will take forever in revenge.
Gimli: What kind of army would linger in such a place? Legolas: One that is cursed. Long ago the men of the mountain swore an oath to the last king of Gondor, to come to his aid, to fight. But when the time came, when Gondor's need was dire, they fled, vanishing into the darkness of the mountain. And so Isildur cursed them, never to rest until they had fulfilled their pledge. Who shall call them from the gray twilight, the forgotten people?
The Oracle: Everything that has a beginning has an end. I see the end coming, I see the darkness spreading. I see death.
Gandalf: Frodo has passed beyond my sight. The darkness is deepening. Aragorn: If Sauron had the Ring, we would know it. Gandalf: It's only a matter of time.
Mickey Gravatski: Remember when I asked you if you could stop killing? And you said that if the seeds that were buried in darkness were never plant... James Lemac: ...were never planted, that I might be able to capture the innocence that I never had. Mickey Gravatski: Yeah. I wondered, who planted those seeds? James Lemac: Hmm Mickey Gravatski: She took you down there and left you there, huh? James Lemac: Who? What are you talking about? Mickey Gravatski: Did you take me down to that cellar to justify what you do? James Lemac: Not everything is for your fuckin' benefit, Mick. Mickey Gravatski: Right. ya know it just seems like... James Lemac: It seems like what? What? What you think I'm killin' my mother? Mickey Gravatski: Yeah. It's obvious. I mean in your mind you think you are. But in reality you're killing innocent women. James Lemac: Look do me a favor, all right? Remove those eight women from the equation, what do ya got? Mickey Gravatski: Wait, how do you remove eight women laying in pools of their own blood, with their eyes taken out? James Lemac: Am I beneath compassion? Mickey Gravatski: What? What compassion did you have? James Lemac: Look I'm just asking you. Just try to remove them from the equation. If you remove them from the equation... Mickey Gravatski: It's not an equation! It's not an equation, it's life! It's body identifications. It's funerals. It's families torn apart. It's moms taking sleeping pills, praying to God that when they wake up their daughters are still alive. James Lemac: Ya know what's confusing you? You see parts of me in yourself, and that makes me human. Mickey Gravatski: You're fuckin' nuts. James Lemac: No, I'm not nuts. But you also see yourself in me. The potential we all have. Mickey Gravatski: "Potential." Potential is not action, action is what defines us. James Lemac: You gotta ask yourself one question. You gotta ask yourself if you still wanna find the human behind the monster. Because if you don't, this whole documentary is a waste. Come on, ya hungry? Mickey Gravatski: Sh-yeah, I haven't had an appetite since I met you.
[last lines for the "Helios" ending] JC Denton: [after merging with Helios] We have grown, but there is still much to be done. Many live in the darkness that must be shown the way. For it is the dawning of a new day.
Ben: That won't go with the veal. Jane: You didn't buy veal. Ben: Yes, and I'm going to serve it with baby piglet's snouts in cream sauce. I made sure the veal was raised in complete darkness and a minimum of movement.
Galadriel: It began with the forging of the Great Rings. Three were given to the Elves; immortal, wisest and fairest of all beings. Seven, to the Dwarf Lords, great miners and craftsmen of the mountain halls. And nine, nine rings were gifted to the race of Men, who above all else desire power. For within these rings was bound the strength and the will to govern over each race. But they were all of them deceived, for a new ring was made. In the land of Mordor, in the fires of Mount Doom, the Dark Lord Sauron forged in secret, a master ring, to control all others. And into this ring he poured all his cruelty, his malice and his will to dominate all life. One ring to rule them all. One by one, the free peoples of Middle Earth fell to the power of the Ring. But there were some who resisted. A last alliance of men and elves marched against the armies of Mordor, and on the very slopes of Mount Doom, they fought for the freedom of Middle-Earth. Victory was near, but the power of the ring could not be undone. It was in this moment, when all hope had faded, that Isildur, son of the king, took up his father's sword. And Sauron, enemy of the free peoples of Middle-Earth, was defeated. The Ring passed to Isildur, who had this one chance to destroy evil forever, but the hearts of men are easily corrupted. And the ring of power has a will of its own. It betrayed Isildur, to his death. And some things that should not have been forgotten were lost. History became legend. Legend became myth. And for two and a half thousand years, the ring passed out of all knowledge. Until, when chance came, the ring ensnared another bearer. The ring came to the creature Gollum, who took it deep into the tunnels under the Misty Mountains, and there it consumed him. The ring gave to Gollum unnatural long life. For five hundred years it poisoned his mind; and in the gloom of Gollum's cave, it waited. Darkness crept back into the forests of the world. Rumor grew of a shadow in the East, whispers of a nameless fear, and the Ring of Power perceived. Its time had now come. It abandoned Gollum. But then something happened that the Ring did not intend. It was picked up by the most unlikely creature imaginable. A hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, of the Shire. For the time will soon come when hobbits will shape the fortunes of all...
[first lines] Lestat: [voiceover] There comes a time for every vampire when the idea of eternity becomes momentarily unbearable. Living in the shadows, feeding in the darkness with only your own company to keep, rots into a solitary, hollow existence. Immortality seems like a good idea, until you realize you're going to spend it alone. So I went to sleep, hoping that the sounds of the passing eras would fade out, and a sort of death might happen. But as I lay there, the world didn't sound like the place I had left, but something different. [rock music begins] Lestat: Better. It became worthwhile to rise again as new gods were born and worshipped. Night and day, they were never alone. I would become one of them. [feeds] Lestat: Whether it was that first meal, or a hundred years of rest, I'm not sure. But suddenly I was feeling better than ever. My senses so high they led me straight to the instrument of my resurrection, playing in my old house.
Alex Fielding: Once upon a time the magical Kingdom of Coventry was besieged by the forces of darkness. In the midst of this battle the twin daughters of Miranda and Aron were born. For their safety the twins were separated and hidden away in another dimension. Alex Fielding: 21 years later the sisters were reunited and returned to the land of their birth where they vanquished their evil Uncle Thantos. Alex Fielding: And destroyed the darkness forever. Alex Fielding: Or did they...
[last lines] Edward Carnby: The gate was closed again. But, like the Abkani discovered there's a price to pay for bringing darkness into the light. The Abkani people were wiped off the face of the Earth. And now it looks like it's happening all over again.
Pinhead: [to Paul while looking at the Earth] Glorious, is it not? The creatures who walk its surface, always looking to the light, never seeing the untold oceans of darkness beyond. There are more humans alive today than in all of its pitiful history. The Garden of Eden. A garden of flesh.
E. Howard Hunt: John, sooner or later, sooner, I think, you're gonna learn a lesson that's been learned by everyone who's ever gotten close to Richard Nixon. That he's the darkness reaching out for the darkness. And eventually, it's either you or him. Your grave's already been dug, John.

Anna: We have to leave, we have to leave! The Darkness is coming!
[extended version, the Houses of Healing] Eowyn: The city has fallen silent. There is no warmth left in the sun. Faramir: [approaching her] It is only the damp of the first spring rain. [Eowyn looks up at him] Faramir: I do not believe this darkness will endure.
Baines: A Muslim must be strikingly upright; an outstanding example so that those in the darkness can see the power of the light.
Television Reporter: Is there a specific instance in an airplane emergency when you can recall fear? Jim Lovell: Uh well, I'll tell ya, I remember this one time - I'm in a Banshee at night in combat conditions, so there's no running lights on the carrier. It was the Shrangri-La, and we were in the Sea of Japan and my radar had jammed, and my homing signal was gone... because somebody in Japan was actually using the same frequency. And so it was - it was leading me away from where I was supposed to be. And I'm lookin' down at a big, black ocean, so I flip on my map light, and then suddenly: zap. Everything shorts out right there in my cockpit. All my instruments are gone. My lights are gone. And I can't even tell now what my altitude is. I know I'm running out of fuel, so I'm thinking about ditching in the ocean. And I, I look down there, and then in the darkness there's this uh, there's this green trail. It's like a long carpet that's just laid out right beneath me. And it was the algae, right? It was that phosphorescent stuff that gets churned up in the wake of a big ship. And it was - it was - it was leading me home. You know? If my cockpit lights hadn't shorted out, there's no way I'd ever been able to see that. So uh, you, uh, never know... what... what events are to transpire to get you home.
Shawn: The bridge you cross is a mental one, not an emotional one, not a physical one. This is what the opium of our darkness aid us in doing. Shawn: I wear the priest cloth symbolizing the death of organized religion and the rise of independent soul reflection. Shawn: I am the god of politics, there is no form of government that I do not control. I am the essence of all government.
Boris Balkan: [speaking of the engravings in 'The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows'] They form a kind of satanic riddle. Correctly interpreted with the aid of the original text and sufficient inside information, they are reputed to conjure up the Prince of Darkness in person.
[first lines] Grandpa Gohan: In a time before many can remember, our planet faced its greatest challenge. A warlord named Piccolo camed from beyond the stars, bringing darkness and chaos to our once peaceful world. Aided by his disciple Oozaru, the evil pair brought the human race to the brink of annihilation. Cities and countries crumbled beneath them. Countless lives were lost. But... finally, a group of brave warriors created the Mu Fu Ba, a powerful enchantment that imprisoned Piccolo deep within the Earth. With his master captured, Oozaru disappeared, and balance was slowly returned to our world. And so it has remained for thousands of years, until now.
Jade: Of all the horrors darkness holds; to die alone, that is my worst fear.
Fox Mulder: Don't give up. [he pauses as he follows Scully to her car] Fox Mulder: Why would he say such a thing to you? Dana Scully: I think that was clearly meant for you, Mulder. Fox Mulder: He didn't say it to me; he said it to you. Dana Scully: Umm... Fox Mulder: If Father Joe were the devil, why would he say the opposite of what the devil might say? [she doesn't reply, though clearly attempting to rationalize] Fox Mulder: Maybe that's the answer, in a larger answer. Dana Scully: What do you mean? Fox Mulder: Don't give up. Dana Scully: Please don't make this any harder than it already is. Fox Mulder: If you have any doubts, Fox Mulder: [wrapping his arms around Scully, allowing her to rest her head on his chest] any doubts at all, call off that surgery and then we'll get out of here... just me and you. Dana Scully: As far away from the darkness as we can get? Fox Mulder: [he loosens his embrace enough to look into her eyes] I'm not sure it works that way. I think maybe the darkness finds you and me. Dana Scully: I know it does. Fox Mulder: Let it try. [they embrace again, this time pulling together in a passionately long kiss]
Joe Bonham: Hurry, mother. Hurry and wake me up; I'm down here in the darkness and I'm having a nightmare!

Sweeney Todd: And in that darkness when I'm blind / With what I can't forget / It's always morning in my mind, / My little lamb, my pet, / Johanna... / You stay, Johanna, / The way I've dreamed you are. / Oh look, Johanna, / A star! / A shooting star! Anthony Hope: Buried sweetly in your yellow hair...
Marlin: [Dory and Marlin are in pitch darkness looking for the mask] Dory, do you see anything? Dory: Ahh! Something's got me! Marlin: That's just me. I'm sorry. Dory: Who's that? Marlin: [exasperated] Who's that? Who else would it be? It's me! Dory: Are... are you my conscience? Marlin: [sighs] Yes, I'm your conscience. We haven't spoken for a while. How are you? Dory: Eh, can't complain. Marlin: Good. Now, Dory, do you see anything? Dory: [angler fish's light approaches] Yes, I see... a light. Hey, conscience, am I dead? Marlin: No, I see it too.
Eddie Baker: [talking to Steven Price while holding up bloody rag] Look at this, huh, what is this! Watson Pritchett: [turns around] "That? What just happened to you there? That's nothing, you just been playing around with a ghost, wait til somebody lets out the darkness in this place, that's a whole... that's a whole new bunch of crazy shit, that's... you'll hate that shit.
Peter Parker: Harry, what are you doing here? Harry: I realised you didn't kill my father. The darkness that consumed him almost finished me too, but you never turned away from me, even after everything I did.
Sniper: [narrating] What have I become? What powers have put me here? We do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
Prof. Kenneth Monnitoff: And did you stop and think that maybe infants need darkness? That maybe darkness is part of their natural environment?
[first lines] Mrs. Summers: Lolly? Lolly! I know you're playing possum. [yanks back covers] Mrs. Summers: Now, little Missy. Men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. John 3:19.
